Description

NASA Astronomical Picture of the Day, August 12, 2009

NGC55 (Caldwell 72) is is large, irregular  spiral galaxy  located at RA 0h 15m 8s and DEC -39deg 13min 10s in the southern constellation of Sculptor.  In this image, north is up and the field is ~40' x 40'.  It is a member of the Sculptor Group of galaxies that also includes NGC300, NGC253 and others, and is 5 million light years distant. The abundant, pink HII regions indicate that considerable star formation is occurring. There are many small galaxies in the background.

Data were acquired automatically with CCDAutoPilot4 running MaximDL4.62 and PinPointPro for image linking.  The system was guided with an SBIG ST-402 camera on an Astrodon MonsterMOAG off-axis guider. Astrodon Generation 2 LRGB filters were used.  Data processing was done in CCDStack and Photoshop CS3.
